History[编辑 | 编辑源代码]

In Mesoamerican belief systems, the world is in a cycle of creation of destruction. The Aztecs believed that the world had been destroyed in an apocalypse 4 times previously, and that bloodshed was necessary to prevent the next apocalypse. Sacrifices fulfilled both a spiritual role in which the Aztecs helped maintain the world by sacrificing captives, and a political role in which the Aztecs asserted their military dominance and hoped to prevent natural disasters like droughts.

Sacrificial captives were often acquired through warfare, and the Aztecs waged the "Flower Wars" against their neighbors to maintain a steady supply of captives and slaves. However, some people sacrificed were free citizens, and most of those sacrificed went willingly due to the benefits promised in the afterlife for those sacrificed to the gods.
